Funny If True - But Not True

From the Herald:
Christchurch mayoral aspirant Jim Anderton told CTV on Friday that it would take an earthquake for him to lose the election race against incumbent mayor Bob Parker.
This story is also being repeated by a number of blogs and websites.

But the only earthquake or seismic shift Anderton talked about on CTV on Friday night was the one that forced him from Labour in the 1980s. He was talking about Rogernomics.  The YouTube clip where he says that is here (about a minute in). Elsewhere in the interview he made a point of downplaying the polls giving him a large lead.

So did someone just make this story up? If so, who and why?

(The other YouTube footage from the CTV interview is here and here. Did I miss something?)
