Those are bad enough.
But the worst thing of all is the prospect of not having a decent toilet to go on.
Now you may think it sounds all soft and prissy for our athletes to object to a lack of proper plumbing. But if you are going to travel to India the one thing you want to have handy is a good crapper. Especially when you're an athlete trying to perform at your peak.
Thankfully for these "pampered" athletes (so-called by many in the media, who have never tried to perform at peak without access to running water or a decent bog), it seems the structural collapse of the actual games venues may be the final nail in the coffin.
A part of the false ceiling at the weightlifting venue for the Commonwealth Games collapsed this afternoon, India media report. If I were an athlete I think that would probably be the last straw for me.
The ceiling collapsed at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium.
So far there have been no reports of injury.
It follows the failure of a pedestrian over-bridge yesterday outside the stadium.
Having encountered squat toilets on my trips to China, I don't blame them for getting upset..
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for India and for the millions of impoverished Indians who could have benefitted from the billions spent on half building the venues. The blame lies with the Commonwealth Games Committee. What were they thinking when the Games were awarded to India? They knew that India has decades and decades of poverty, poor sanitation, slums, mozzies, inepitude and corruption in high places etc etc the list goes on. And who chose the date? In monsoon season? If India was set up to fail, then the Games were set up to fail as well. All those slum dwellers who were moved on to make way for the Games venues should move in en masse if the Games don't go ahead but what's the bet that some Indian cabal is waiting in the wings to take over and profit from a complex that was built from taxpayer funds?
