Life's A Scream

Life is all bad for Rodney Hide.

But here's a nightmare scenario that must be playing in his head as he tries to sleep.

David Garrett resigns from Parliament.

The next person on the list is Hilary Calvert, an Otago lawyer. Calvert can see the writing on the wall for ACT and so decides not to take Garrett's place. Why risk it all for just a year of drama, squabbling and humiliation?

The next person on the list is Peter Tashkoff. Tashkoff is hostile to Rodney Hide and has been vocal in calls to oust him. Tashkoff, Roy and Douglas now outnumber Hide and Boscawen.

Sweet dreams, Rodney.

  1. It may not take that scenario to realise Hide's nightmare. Calvert's quoted in the NZ Herald as saying: "I think it is important, particularly in a small party like Act, that the leader has everyone's total support. And I would do that unreservedly."

The writer of the Herald article, Paul Harper, interpreted that as support for Hide.

I'm not so sure. As a lawyer, Calvert will likely chose her words carefully. And Hide clearly does not have the support of Roy and Douglas. So a Hide leadership does not meet Calvert's criteria that the "leader has everyone's total support".

  2. I am very much enjoying the destruction of the Act party. I mean, "association of consumers and taxpayers". What does that say about how they see people and society?
