Thanks Phil & Co

Just a quick post to say a big thank you to Phil Goff and the people who advise him.

If Labour were to win in November I'd be left with a problem. What would I write about? With a centre-left government in power I'd be left with nothing but the dregs of a Keyless National opposition to pick over. I'd be forced to write post after post about how wonderful software and gene patents are, and I'm sure you wouldn't like that.

Thankfully the chances of Labour now winning appear as remote as the chances of my being appointed TVNZ's next breakfast TV host. So I'm still in business!

  1. Are you going to be on the radio again any time soon?

I believe this is known as "the Kiwiblog conundrum". The answer is, you keep writing about how terrible the other side is, how they are lying about your side, and how things were worse when the other side were in charge. Mixed with the occasional expression of mild disappointment when your side commits the inevitable sin of failing to do everything you want it to.

All in all, it's not half as much fun.

  3. We are in negotiations. My exorbitant appearance fees and extravagant dressing room demands are apparently causing difficulties for Radio NZ.

  4. I think in the extremely unlikely event of a Labour victory this year Key would stick around as leader of the opposition. John Banks came back as Mayor of Auckland, it's not inconceivable that a one-term PM could do so too.

  5. Hugh, John Key recently said he wasn't very interested in being in opposition. In the unlikely event of a Labour victory I suspect he'd pack his bags and return to the private sector. That's my guess anyway.

Farrar's had a good run of late, though, thanks to the monumental ineptitude of Labour. After the next election it could be a more difficult act, though.

  7. Scott: Perhaps Farrar has had a good run because of the machinations of Farrar.

  8. That's true Scott, but then, what kind of arse-backwards media strategy would it be for a sitting and popular PM to say "Oh yes, blimey, I'd love to be in opposition?". I think that's less a reflection of his genuine preferences and more a matter of the fact that his media advisors are above a certain baseline level of competency.
